Sunnyside Office

The Center for Community Health Promotion (CCHP) is located in Sunnyside, WA. It is home to the community outreach team for the Thompson Studies group. It is through their established neighborhood rapport and hard work that research in this rural population is made possible.

The CCHP leads different projects that are funded through grants to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The overall goal of these projects is to work with the community to reduce the health disparities experienced by American Indians and Hispanics in the Lower Yakima Valley of Eastern Washington State.

The staff of trained health promoters focuses on simple changes in lifestyle behaviors that are associated with reductions in cancer and other diseases. The three main topics are: Pesticide exposure, cancer prevention, obesity and diabetes awareness. The health promoters provide all information and materials in Spanish and English through activities such as:

  • Home Health Parties – Small group gatherings that take place in a home setting where a health promoter presents various health topics to participant’s friends and relatives.
  • Health Fairs – Table displays with health information and health promoters who can answer questions that community members may have about these health topics.
  • Radio Talk Shows – Call in shows about different health topics that are broadcasted through local Spanish-language radio stations.
  • Presentations at organizations, schools, or businesses.
