Dr. Chen has dedicated himself to the development and dissemination of new statistical methods and applications for clinical trials and epidemiologic studies in infectious disease research, particularly in the area of HIV/AIDS. He is involved in the design and analysis of many high-impact clinical trials. His work includes the landmark HPTN 052 study, which was recognized as a scientific breakthrough in HIV prevention research. For this HPTN study, he led the design, monitoring, and analysis that showed a 96% efficacy of the Treatment-as-Prevention strategy. In addition to his HPTN contributions, Dr. Chen serves as PI of several NIH funded grants to develop statistical methods for these data, see a research projects tab for details. Up until recently, he was a Chartered Member for the NIH Study Section on AIDS and Clinical Epidemiology (ACE). Dr. Chen also frequently serves as a DSMB member for large multicenter domestic and international clinical trials. He was the PI and the Director for the Sunovion Statistical Data Analysis Center, providing FDA-approved DSMB services.
